Undertone 101: How to Determine Your Undertone!

Poster on

If you are reading this, you have probably smiled and nodded one too many times when a makeup artist or cosmetic boutique staff member has asked for your undertone. We’ve been there and we are here to help you solve this mystery once and for all.

Determine

 What is Undertone?

Undertone is the color below your skin’s surface. While skin tone refers to your skin color, undertone refers to the shade within that color.

Types of Undertones

There are three types of undertones:

1. Warm: Golden, peachy, or yellow undertones

2. Cold: Bluish, red, or pink undertones

3. Neutral: Not to complicate things, but this is a mixture of both warm and cool undertones

Whether you are kissed by the sun or embracing your winter skin, you always maintain the same undertone year round.

Why You Should Know Your Undertone

Have you ever given yourself a full face of makeup before an important night out and then realized harsh lines? There is only so much that blending can do if it isn’t the right shade for you.

When it comes to choosing the right NUDESTIX shade, it is important to understand your undertone. This will allow your makeup to look as natural as possible, which is exactly how we like it. Not only will knowing your undertone help you choose the right foundation and concealer, it will also help you understand the best cheek, lip, and eye colors that work for you!

How to Find Your Undertone

Don’t worry, it is actually fairly easy to find your undertone. No skills required!

One way to check for your undertone is by checking your veins. If your veins look greenish, then you may have warm undertones. If you have blue like veins, you have a cool undertone. And If you have a neutral undertone, then your veins may appear colorless or match the color of your skin.

You can also figure out your undertone by doing a jewelry test. Are you more of a gold girly or a loyal silver kind of person? If you lean towards gold, you may have warm undertones and if you prefer silver jewelry, you may have cool tones.

You can also learn more about your undertone by understanding how your skin reacts with the sun! If you are more prone to burns in the summertime (appl your SPF love!) you have a cool undertone. If you tan easily, you have a warm undertone. Finally, if you burn and then tan, you have a neutral undertone.
