NUDESTIX co-founder Taylor Frankel sat down with Beverly Hills-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jason Emer (well, on Instagram Live!) to get to the bottom of a question that plagues so many skincare lovers: how to layer your products to get the most efficiency out of them. Sure, it’s easy when you’re just using a cleanser and a moisturizer but when you add in toner, serum, SPF, and more, things can get complicated.

Dr. Emer is actually a collaborator with NUDESTIX and helped ensure the entire NUDESKIN brand delivers high-quality, plant-powdered skincare that’s good for the skin and the environment. The newest product he’s most excited about is Nudescreen Daily Mineral Veil SPF 30, a lightweight, oil-free, tinted sunscreen that doesn’t just block the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays, but also provides anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits to the skin.

But when do you apply it? What if you’re wearing a face full of makeup? “Sunscreen is the last step in your skincare routine and the first step in your makeup routine,” Taylor says. Generally, you’ll want to cleanse, exfoliate, and tone and then you’re ready for your treatments. “Serums before lotions, before creams, and then sunscreen,” Dr. Emer adds. Think: thinnest to thickest products.

1. Cleanse With an Oil-Based Face Wash

“You have to not only lift the debris near the pores before you full cleanse,” Dr. Emer explains. He says whether you over or under-product oil, you have to use oil to cleanse the skin and regulate the pH balance. Try NUDESKIN Citrus Clean Balm & Makeup Melt.

2. Double Cleanse With a Water-Based Cleanser

Next comes NUDESKIN Gentle Hydra-Gel Face Cleanser, packed with hyaluronic acid and Bergamot fruit oil. “It really cleans the true surface of the skin, especially if you wear makeup,” Taylor says.

3. Exfoliate

“Anyone who knows me knows I like a little exfoliation,” Dr. Emer says. “Papaya enzymes and lemon extract helps to remove all the dead surface cells so that when you put products on the skin, they penetrate more.” Of course, he’s speaking about the cult-fave, gentle NUDESKIN Lemon-Aid Detox & Glow Micro-Peel

4. Tone

Dr. Emer admits he uses NUDESKIN 5% Citrus Fruit & Glycolic Glow Toner every day — all over his body! That’s because it contains glycolic acid, citrus fruit acids and hyaluronic acid to give the skin a hydrated, radiant glow.

5. Apply a Hydrating Sunscreen

“The end step is really securing everything you did,” Dr. Emer says.  Nudescreen Daily Mineral Veil SPF 30 contains hydrating ingredients along with the physical SPF benefits. “It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients to actually help your skin,” he adds.

If you have fears about combining products, it’s important to pay close attention to what your skin can tolerate. Dr. Emer says never to combine benzoyl peroxide with retinol because It can dye your skin yellow, stain your clothing, and cause excess irritation. Luckily, NUDESKIN has calming activities for an everyday routine that keeps your skin healthy and protected — even on the go.
